Ian Smith, Rob Fleming, Director of Sustainability at FCA, and Mary Holland, Principal at Cicada Architecture + Planning were part of the discussion “Adaptive Reuse: Stories from the Trenches” this past July. The discussion was created to provoke and inspire action from architects, clients, developers by delving into the complexity of embodied and operational carbon for our HSW oath. Rob provided context and framing for embodied carbon, operational carbon, total carbon and adaptive reuse through the proposition of Preservation Sustainability. Ian shared his stories of adaptive reuse, through a less hierarchical, common sense approach. Mary Holland told her stories of three very different buildings and their adaptive reuse challenges, and the final solutions with the client.
